The Moment

We are on the cusp of something great, something wonderful, something never before seen in our generation or any before us.  As we sit here on this great precipice of history, I think it benefits us to not forget how this happened.

This happened because legions of ordinary Americans united together in one voice under a call for something new – something better.  This happened because millions of people showed support with what money they could afford to give, and also with their votes — turning out the polls in caucuses, primaries, and on election day in record numbers.  This happened because the American Democratic process works.  There’s nothing like it — is this a great country or what?

As we celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America, let’s be of a sober collective mind and not forget that the real work begins this Tuesday.  We’re in two wars.  We are in a recession that shows no signs of easing up anytime soon.  We’re facing numerous threats at home and abroad, and his job couldn’t be more difficult. The pressure is definitely on – this one man is carrying the burdens, hopes, and expectations of our entire nation of 300 million people squarely on his shoulders.

He is, after all, a man. One man. A really extraordinary guy, granted, but still just one man. He needs our prayers and support now more than ever, and I challenge everyone to do more than just celebrate the beginning of what may be the best Presidency of modern history, but do your part to help ensure that the incoming Obama administration is a success.

If there’s an issue that matters to you, call your congressman. Write him or her a letter. Send them an e-mail. Our elected officials are in place to represent the beliefs and views of us, ordinary citizens, their constituents, so let your voice be heard – it will make a difference.

This isn’t hard, folks. As an example, I went to the website for Senator Richard Shelby and expressed my concern with his position on a recent political issue. He wrote and mailed me a response letter, explaining why he believed his position was right and was for the benefit of his constituents. He explained some things I didn’t think about, and although I still don’t agree with his final position, I understand where he’s coming from and believe that he really does have the best interests of his constituents at heart.

Logon to change.gov and leave comments to the Presidential Transition team about how you think America can be best improved. Here’s the shocker — they actually read the comments and reply by posting videos of follow-up questions to understand what America wants and needs.
This is our country. You have a voice. Make sure it is heard!

We can never forget this time. This is history – don’t let it slip away! We can never forget this journey – this is the day we said to the world that “America is greater than you think!” We can never forget the dream. Leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. fought day in and day out just for this kind of progress to be made.

These are extraordinary times. Never forget the moment!
